| Welcome
to our 2009-10 season. Our Chairman, Theresa Lyons and our Music Director,
Martin Hindmarsh, hope that you will find listening to our music as enjoyable
as we shall find it to prepare.
Martin writes “Messiah, Handel’s enduring masterpiece which influenced a succeeding generation of composers, is the benchmark by which all other oratorios are measured. Vivaldi’s Gloria is equally popular and will provide an uplifting start to our spring concert. Its crisp texture and restrained lyricism afford the perfect foil for Poulenc’s much grander setting, with powerful vocal writing and expansive orchestration. It’s a mature masterpiece, one of Poulenc’s final works. In complete contrast, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria was the composer’s first major work, and it is clearly a young man’s music- direct in its approach and full of vigour. If the abundance of melody in our spring concert were not enough, A Night at the Opera in July offers even more, with arias, choruses and orchestral music from some of the best loved operas.” Theresa
adds, “Don’t forget our Christmas concert, when BAE
SYSTEMS Brass Band and Brunswick House School Choir will make their
exhilarating contribution to the festive spirit.” |
